Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra's Benefits

Physical

The physical practice of Yoga Nidra is a passive one. The students set themselves up in a comfortable, supine position reclining on the floor with the support of bolsters, blankets and other props, as needed, to ensure comfort through the length of the session, which could be as long as 1 hour and as short as 20 minutes. Lying absolutely still, and focusing on the words of the instructor, the practice is one that results in the body attaining a state of sleep while the mind attains a state of open alertness.

Mental

Due to the fact that the process is entirely guided, the student lies absolutely comfortable and still, the result is attaining a brainwave state that is of a lower frequency and higher amplitude than is the waking brain wave state. In this state of mind, learning becomes magnificently optimized and accelerated. The result being that the intentions, resolves, sankalpas set by the student at the start and end of the yoga nidra session are able to manifest quite quickly and effortlessly.

Spiritual

The spiritual results of yoga nidra are infinite possibilities. Depending upon the spiritual condition of the student, the results can be anywhere from a subtle awareness of the power of these spiritual practices and exercise to a more dramatic integration and synthesis of various threads of learning and awareness that the student is working on in their spiritual life. Ultimately, harmony between body, mind and spirit is the goal and intention of all of these exercises.

The Practice

The practice begins with the student lying supine on their yoga mat with the support of blankets, pillows and bolsters to be the most comfortable that they can be. While practicing stillness and attention, the student is guided by the practioner about what to pay attention to. All the student need do is follow the verbal instructions of the practitioner to attain the state of inner stillness that results in ultimate resolution of their mentally stated intention at the the start of the session. With repeated sessions, students are able to attain alert rest to higher and higher degrees. The results will astound even the most experienced of yogis.
